Miami's Best Restaurants- "Tiers of Excellence"

TV SOUTH PARK

A lot of eating and thinking went into this updated ranking.  As a result, this is the most accurate ranking to date.  Once again I am challenging myself and limiting the rankings to the Top Twenty and ties.

It should be noted that while food is the primary factor in my formula, value, service, ambiance and wine/beverage programs also play an important role.

These are THE TWENTY restaurants in Miami that you want to pay a visit to this summer and spend your hard earned money.

Eat well and eat often!!

TIER ONE- The best of the best.  Guaranteed to have a knockout meal every visit plus great service and an overall outstanding experience.  These are special places.

Naoe- (Miami) Simply the best in every way and probably deserves their own tier. Wendy will blow you away with her hospitality and service and Kevin will knock your socks off with mind blowing sushi. His bento box isn't too shabby either. Must do place for any and all occasions. A+++

 http://distilleryimage5.s3.amazonaws.com/a5f4505e9a1511e2926822000a1f9c9b_7.jpg

The Cypress Room - (Miami Design District) This new addition from James Beard Award winning chef, Michael Schwartz oozes sophistication and class in every way just like me. Close attention has been paid to every detail from the table settings, to the decor, to the service, to the cocktails to the wine list and most importantly to the food. Miami is no longer lacking a true upscale, fine dining spot. Kudos to chef Schwartz and his team for delivering a gem to Miami.

Dinner with Jose.. Everything on the menu. Nuts!!

Jose's Taco-Caviar, Jamon Iberico

The Bazaar - (South Beach) Chef Jose Andres delivered a creative and fun dining experience to Miami.  They curated a unique, interesting and delicious menu that makes every visit special. This is a well run ship and a must do for locals and tourists alike.

TIER ONE POINT FIVE- Da Ali G TIER- RESPECT!!

Chicken Liver Crostini

Michael's Genuine Food & Drink- (Miami Design District) Chef Schwartz and team haven't skipped a beat at local favorite MGFD. The food remains up there with the best in town and is easily the best spot for lunch and brunch. Make sure you pay attention to their daily specials because there are usually a gem or two in the mix. Also make sure to take advantage of the great wine list curated by one of the best sommeliers in town, Eric Larkee. Cocktails here are underrated and a fantastic deal during happy hour.

Michelle Bernstein & her Common Threads Kids

Michy's- (Miami Upper Eastside) Michelle Bernstein remains one of the most talented and influential chefs in town. Her food is always consistently outstanding. All hits and never a miss.

TIER TWO- This is an outstanding tier of restaurants putting out great food on a daily basis and providing an overall great dining experience.  On the cusp of tier one status.

http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/e60ac6527af111e292fc22000a1f9806_7.jpg
Duck Fat Fries

Bourbon Steak- (Aventura)  Continues to be one of my favorite spots in town. Chef Gabe Fenton is as good as it gets and is well deserving of a James Beard Award nomination.  Hello! Anyone home at the Beard House or at Mina PR?  Gabe's specials always shine and everything is always executed perfectly.  The service, cocktails and wine list are on par.

                                    Makoto

http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaws.com/5fb3610c837211e28d6622000a1fbc43_7.jpg
Ohhhhh

Makoto- (Bal Harbour) Makoto may be the most underrated spots by the masses in Miami. Chef Makoto's sushi rivals Naoe and his regular menu excels too. This is a special sushi spot and a must do for all sushi fans.

http://distilleryimage0.s3.amazonaws.com/cec6bc84642c11e28b9f22000a9e0708_7.jpg

White Bolognese stuffed agnolotti, shaved truffle

The Dutch- (South Beach) Executive Chef Conor Hanlon is a superstar on the rise. He has the great fortune to be learning from one of the best chefs in the country, Andrew Carmellini. The food that comes out of this kitchen is up there with the best in town. Make sure you save room for dessert because pastry chef Josh Gripper is one of the best in town.

http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/5752f28eb18a11e285d522000a9f3c76_7.jpg
Black Spaghetti- sea urchin, lobster & scallions

Macchialina - (South Beach) This is the best Italian place in Miami bar none. Chef Mike Pirolo is crushing it on several levels. His housemade pastas are delicious and his sauce is addictive. His daily specials including his risotto should not be overlooked. A cool neighborhood vibe make this one of the best spots on South Beach and Miami too.make sure you pay a visit during lunch hours for his recently opened Pirolo's Panino.  Best sandwiches in town and it's not even close.

http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaws.com/6f704a3c61a411e28c4722000a9f1966_7.jpg

db Bistro Moderne- (Miami) Daniel Boulud. Enough said. In all seriousness, I have never had a bad meal at a Boulud run restaurant and db Bistro Moderne is no exception. The charcuterie is unbelievably good and the regular menu always delivers. Look out for their special wine and cocktail dinners as they offer good value and great meals.

neMesis Urban Bistro- (Miami) Micah Micah I love me some Micah.  Chef Micah and neMesis is a diamond in the rough outskirts of downtown Miami. It's one of my favorite spots in town because I know Micah will always be behind the stove turning out passionate and inspired plates. A true gem in every way.

                     http://distilleryimage1.ak.instagram.com/2a122bb4d4bc11e2a32722000aa800c4_7.jpg

Restaurant Michael Schwartz- (South Beach) The unbeatable charm of the patio of The Raleigh Hotel, the legendary Martini Bar and star chef Michael Schwartz. The trifecta of Miami dining! This hybrid of Michael's Genuine Food & Drink and The Cypress Room is distinct enough to demand your attention and business. Special place, special chef. Go!

http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaws.com/2e4d5dbe619611e283b822000a9f124c_7.jpg

Edge Steak & Bar- (Miami) I am a huge fan of Chef Brooks and probably rated Edge too low here.  Part of the problem for me is the downtown hotel location. That being said, I have attended several outstanding dinners here and chef Brooks is one of the best in town.  No brainer if you live or are staying in downtown Miami.

                              http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/425b113ee47811e1854522000a1cdaf1_7.jpg

J&G Grill - (Bal Harbour) Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten did his homework when he assembled his Miami crew. The talented team is lead by Jordi Valles, Richard Gras and Antonio "nitro coco" Bachour. This is modern fine dining at its best. Make the effort to go and make sure you save plenty of room for the mind blowing desserts of Antonio. Hey James Beard, hello!!!!

TIER TWO POINT FIVE- The Best of Breed Tier. Doing one thing and kicking ass at it.

http://distilleryimage0.s3.amazonaws.com/fb501206820811e28e0922000a9f1335_7.jpg

Lucali -(South Beach) LOVE Lucali.  This Brooklyn import is serving the best pizza in town and it's not even close.  The pies are perfect and feature a ridiculously addictive sauce.  Go! and get a calzone while you're at it.  Thank me later.

http://distilleryimage5.s3.amazonaws.com/68bbb2506bf711e2ad7a22000a9f3090_7.jpg

Momi Ramen- (Miami) I never understood the fascination with ramen. That was until I stepped foot into Momi. Great ramen noodles, great broth paired with delicious combinations of ingredients.

** Joe's Stone Crab qualifies in season and Shake Shake would too but for fast food status. My Ceviche (South Beach) is just too small to rank but I highly recommend their octopus burrito.

*** Pirolo's Panino recently opened during lunch at Macchialina.  GO!

TIER THREE- This tier is loaded with spots I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Some of the best in town.

http://distilleryimage0.s3.amazonaws.com/18da084e91aa11e2962d22000a1f9aa0_7.jpg
Hamachi Kama

Yakko-San (North Miami Beach) Easily my most frequented spot over the past few years. Yes, I miss the vibe of the original location but the food has not changed. The specials board is always the way to go plus sprinkle in some staples along with a new dish or two. I could rattle off a recommended dish list but that would take too long. That being said, if you see the hamachi kama on the specials board jump on it. Email me if you are going and need some tips. It should be noted that traditional sushi is not their strong suit but I do like many of their non sushi raw offerings.

                             http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaws.com/a207a11a66ff11e2a9d822000a9e29af_7.jpg

Khong River House- (South Beach) I've had some terrific dishes from Chef Bee and the Khong kitchen. The menu contains several unique offerings that you will be hard pressed to find around town.

http://distilleryimage5.s3.amazonaws.com/571ae43ac35e11e2926822000a1f9c9b_7.jpg
Wood grilled Deckle, truffle ricotta potato ravioli, gin fennel cream spinach & fried chili onion rings

Meat Market - (South Beach) Meat Market makes a return to the rankings. They were a mainstay for years but dropped off following a bad experience including a long wait, poor service and a bad steak. But I recently returned and easily recalled why I always thought fondly of them. The setting, models and energetic vibe alone makes them tier worthy.

http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/44f6cfc2cc7c11e2b19622000a1f9d89_7.jpg

http://distilleryimage8.s3.amazonaws.com/189493b4cbc911e2ba2d22000a1f97cd_7.jpg

Tongue and Cheek- (South Beach) Triple D's B's, burger, brunch & bourbon. And a great chef! I've been several times now but still need to go back and have a proper dinner to accurately rank them. Nevertheless, chef DeRosa has created an interesting and diverse menu with something for everyone. This one should climb the ranks in the upcoming months.

The JDonn Triple Egg- Ikura, Uni & Quail

Sushi Deli- (North Bay Village) This tiny hole in the wall serves some killer sushi at great prices.  It's located inside a Japanese market and closes early so plan accordingly.

http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/5b4391443b6211e2b0f022000a9f1369_7.jpg
Artichoke Heart Bruschetta-farm poached egg, shaved truffles, creamy parmigiano fonduta

MC Kitchen - (Miami Design District) I've had some very nice meals at MC Kitchen. Chef Marino's dishes are all well balanced and prepared with finesse.

http://distilleryimage8.s3.amazonaws.com/ed7a5ede0f1c11e2b8f122000a1e9e4c_7.jpg
Fire roasted oysters, softito butter, chorizo, queso manchego

The River Oyster Bar-  (Miami) Oysters, oysters and more great oysters. Half price during happy hour too!

http://distilleryimage6.s3.amazonaws.com/153eecb4876811e2852a22000a9e0709_7.jpg
Stone Crab Crostini with Avocado

Oak Tavern - (Miami Design District) Chef Bracha (River Oyster) has another hit on his hands with his new neighborhood joint in the Design District. The menu is large, interesting and always executed properly.

http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/334b60e4b43a11e285e422000a1fb768_7.jpg
Scallop with brussels sprouts, corn, asparagus &cherry gastrique

Blue Collar- (Miami Upper Eastside) Chef Danny Serfer is the comfort king with a little bling bling. Danny spent several years in the Chef Allen kitchen and knows his way around seafood and fine dining. But at Blue Collar he is killing it with straight forward "blue collar" fare that is straight up delicious. Don't miss the cheeseburger, Corben, Big Ragout or his fried chicken and jambalaya on the late night menu. His scallops rock too!

To Do list- Catch, Zuma, The Setai, Haven, Tosca & Copperbox.  Plus long overdue returns to Mandolin, Scarpetta, Azul and Toscano Divino.

Best Burgers South Florida - "Tiers of a Burger"

http://c2.api.ning.com/files/4QveBQ2UcvnyF5cT6KhkI3gS5UvC5wPY0wio10q3Bh95uAL0*Cmdv1HBnZwz7DvF6V6YRXlSndYto78CZexRwA16KeCMRDF3/ronald.jpg

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost nine months since I've updated my Best Burgers in South Florida Rankings.  Well, the time has come to provide you with an update. During that time span, I've had a lot of great burgers including some from new arrivals on the scene.

This time I've decided to limit my tiers to the ten best in South Florida plus ties.  As you will see, the burger scene continues to improve making these rankings even more difficult.

It should be noted that my burger ranking is all about the burger.  Unlike my "tiers of a excellence", service, wine lists, ambiance, value do not play a role.  This is all about the blend, the bun, the seasoning, the toppings and the overall execution.  *I've had each of these burgers on multiple occasions unless noted*

These ten are all serving fantastic burgers that I highly recommend.

TIER ONE

Shake Shack - I always order a single ShackBurger which is a cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and shacksauce. Burgers are 100% all natural angus beef, ground daily and cooked medium.  The single is the perfect burger in every way and I will leave it at that.

http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/f5ca053698cd11e2881122000a9f12f2_7.jpg

The Cypress Room (Miami Design District) Michael Schwartz's outstanding new upscale restaurant serves a dynamite burger.  The beefy patty contains trimmings from the rib cap and is topped with a delicious Jasper Hill Landaff and onion marmalade. The combination is perfect and the housemade bun seals the deal. This is a special burger.

TIER TWO

Bourbon Steak - (Aventura) I've enjoyed numerous all-beef, dry aged burgers topped with melted farmhouse cheddar, shredded lettuce, balsamic onions and secret sauce at Bourbon Steak over the years.  It is still one of my favorites in town and it is consistently excellent.  The duck fat fries are not to be missed.

http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/88e77b2eb43911e2900122000a1f932b_7.jpg

Blue Collar - This is a burger that I appreciate more with every visit.  Their "Real Juicy Cheeseburger" is prime dry aged NY Strip that is always seasoned properly and cooked perfectly.  And it's served on a delicious Portuguese muffin.  They had me at burger and muff.

http://distilleryimage6.s3.amazonaws.com/63885a42b90711e2b39c22000a1f8adc_7.jpg

Umami Burger - (South Beach) I've only been to Umami on one occasion but the overall combination was outstanding and easily top ten in town. I opted for the "Umami Burger" which is topped with a shiitake mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp and umami ketchup. The medium rare patty cooked on a flat top griddle was wonderful on its own.  The flavors of the toppings, the texture of the crisp and the perfectly sized bun really enhanced the experience. I was legitimately craving more hours later.

http://distilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com/b7bceb0c25ee11e2a86422000a1f9839_7.jpg

Burger Fi - (Aventura +) Yes, BurgerFi is a complete ripoff of Shake Shack in every facet of the operation.  But they did a great job at it and they are much closer to home.  Side by side, I go to Shake Shack every time.  That being said, BurgerFi is putting out great burgers and deserve credit for it. My go to is a single BurgerFi Burger, all natural, grass fed angus burger, lettuce, tomato and secret sauce. Pictured above is the ultimate cheeseburger- double natural prime brisket burger, Swiss cheese, blue cheese, tomato, pickles & BurgerFi sauce.

http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/4905215ccf1711e2996f22000a1fbc6f_7.jpg

Tongue and Cheek- (South Beach) Another newcomer making their debut in the rankings.  Tongue is operated by chef Jamie DeRosa formerly of Tudor House.  As you may recall, his Tudor Burger always ranked highly here.  His new version, a tender and flavorful beef cheek burger paired with cheddar pimento cheese, sweet onions and  housemade brioche may be even better.  Look for this one to rise in the rankings.

http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/ea82d7e4c3e211e2819322000a1faa24_7.jpg

Wolfgang's Steakhouse- (Miami) Yes another newcomer to town, making their debut in the rankings.
Wolfgang Zweiner was a waiter at the legendary Brooklyn steakhouse, Peter Luger's for forty years and he clearly took some good notes during his tenure. His burger was hand packed lightly and seasoned perfectly.  It was cooked to a proper medium rare and was full of great beefy flavor.  The bun supported the patty nicely and had a proper bun to patty ratio.

This is a burger for traditional burger fans and I highly recommend paying them a visit for it alone. It should be noted that the burger is only available during lunch. *Only had this burger one time*

TIER THREE

http://aht.seriouseats.com/images/2013/01/20130108-burger-city-guide-ny-db-bistro-moderne.jpg

db Bistro Moderne- (Miami) The Original db Burger.  I really wrestled with where to rank this one. A case could be made that it is easily the best burger in town and/or tier one worthy.  This monster burger consists of a sirloin burger filled with wine braised short rib, foie gras, preserved black truffle on a parmesan bun.  Sounds like the original umami burger to me!  The foie, black truffle and short rib all work together making this an outstanding treat.  I bumped it down to tier three because it's just not practical to eat this burger on a regular basis unlike the rest.

Houston's- (Aventura +) Houston's? The chain?? Yes! Houston's. Get the Cheeseburger with fresh ground chuck, cheddar, lettuce, tomato and onion on a toasted egg bun.  This is a legit burger.

http://distilleryimage5.s3.amazonaws.com/c07638bcee1611e19cf61231381321cd_7.jpg

J&G Grill- (Bal Harbour) Pastry Chef extraordinaire Antonio "nitro coco" Bachour insisted that I try their burger during a lunch visit and it was almost as good as his desserts.  The delicious J&G Cheeseburger is paired with black truffle dressing, brie and served on a terrific housemade bun that hung with the burger until the last bite.

LoKal- (Coconut Grove) Unfortunately, I don't get down to the Grove much and have only been to Lokal on one occasion.  But one burger no one bite was all it took to know that this was a quality burger and tier worthy.  I went with the The Classic, Florida grass fed burger with thinly sliced white onions, tomato, shredded lettuce, dill pickles, sharp Wisconsin cheddar, mayo and mustard. The grass fed beef flavor shines through here.  I suspect that this one may be a tad underrated here.

Honorable mentions- The Dutch and Michael's Genuine Food & Drink

To do list- Swine Southern and  PB Steak

And yes it was a clean sweep for Miami-Dade County.

Tiers of a Pizza! Best Pizza South Florida

Leaning Tower of Pizza

Its been a while since I've updated my list of the Best Pizza in South Florida. During that time I've sampled, okay destroyed a lot of great tasting pies.   I've frequented old favorites and found some new gems along the way including a dynamite new import from Brooklyn.

As many of my readers know, I am a huge pizza fan who grew up in NY.  Thus, I love traditional NY style slices but I'm also a huge fan of the thin crust pies coming out of the coal and wood fired ovens all over South Florida.

**When I refer to dough, I am talking about the portion under the cheese and sauce. "crust" to me is the edge of the dough that you fold. I believe that is technically referred to as cornicione. I suppose you can simply call the entire dough the crust and the edge the upper crust. Whatever!! I like calling it pizza dough and crust. No idea if that is proper terminology or not but it's always been mine.**

These are the best of the best in South Florida.

TIER ONE

Pizzeria Oceano

Pizzeria Oceano (Lantana) As I've previously advised, they've been serving the best pizza in South Florida and they'd easily hold their own against the best in the country.  Pictured above is their basic pizza which features housemade mozzarella, olive oil, pecorino romano, tomato sauce and basil. The sauce, cheese and dough are all fantastic and the ratio is perfect.  The crust has a nice char and tastes great. This is a perfect pizza and worth the drive from Miami for sure.   Their non pizza offerings are excellent too.  This is a special place.

Lucali

Lucali (South Beach) If you have been reading my blog posts and/or following me on Twitter, you already know that I have a huge pizza crush on Lucali.  As someone who loves traditional NY style pizza as well as thin crust, wood oven pies, this is a knockout combination.  You can read my original Five Star review here.  In a nutshell, everything about  this pizza is perfect from the addictive sauce to the fresh cheese to the tasty and chewy dough.  Plus, the overall ratio is spot on.  Save some room for the "Costanza" Calzone as it may be the best I've had.  Make sure you pair it with that super sauce.

I've been asked several times now which pizza was better Oceano or Lucali? Great question and one I really can't answer without doing a same day tasting.  That will go down real soon.... Stay Tuned!

TIER TWO

Scuola Vecchia Pizza

Scuola Vecchia Pizzeria (Delray Beach) The chef trained at the critically acclaimed Keste Pizza e Vino on Bleeker Street in NYC. Pictured above is the classic Neapolitan pizza, the Regina Margherita.  It features imported bufala mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, tomato sauce, extra virgin olive oil and basil. This is great pizza and on the cusp of joining the big guns in Tier One.  I need to go back for more.

Mauro's

Mauro's (Downtown Hollywood)- Huge authentic NY style slices. Perfect dough, sauce and cheese ratio. Their sauce skews slightly on the sweet side.  The best NY style slice in South Florida.

Kings County
Grandma Pie Kings County

Kings County Pizza (Aventura) They are serving authentic NY style pies including stellar sicilian and grandma pies. p.s. Their baked ziti is even better.

***Tip- when you are ordering a NY style slice please make sure you are getting a slice from a fresh pie and not one that is being reheated,  Huge difference.  I grabbed a quick slice recently at Kings that was clearly reheated.  Still good but not in the same league as the fresh pie.***

Cafe la Buca

Cafe La Buca (Pompano Beach)- NY style/thin crust hybrid. Fantastic tasting dough with a nice chew. The cheese and sauce is top notch and perfectly proportioned. Pizza is cooked in a wood-fired oven imported from their hometown of Naples, Italy.  Five tables, daily changing verbal menu.  Get a small pie so you can try one of their fresh housemade pastas. Hidden gem and a must visit.

White Clam, Bacon & Garlic-Nick's Pizzeria & Bar

Nick's Pizzeria & Bar

Nick's Pizzeria & Bar (Boca Raton) Nick's debuted in the rankings last go round. They specializes in New Haven style "apizza". The classic apizza is the "white clam pie" which consists of littleneck clams, garlic, olive oil, oregano and grated cheese. I've opted for their white clam, garlic and bacon pizza which is an awesome combination and a great pie. Their crust is great and features a really nice char.

TIER THREE

delivery guy from Harry's

Crispy lamb, heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, spicy sauce & herbs

Harry's Pizzeria (Miami) The best thing about Harry's is that it continues to improve. Skip the margherita and opt for one of their creative pies featuring awesome topping combinations or their daily special.  You won't leave disappointed. Harry's serves unique style pies that are topping driven.  Don't go in expecting traditional style pizza. Go in expecting creative, fresh and tasty combinations.  Don't skip their fantastic new beer, Michael's Genuine Home Brew..

Macalusos Market (South Beach) - I'm a big fan of Macaluso's and was very happy when he opened the market next door. The Market features their legendary meatballs, heroes and pastas.  They also serve fantastic pizzas. Kill two birds with one stone and order the meatball pie.

Steve's (North Miami)- This is a place I really want to love but always falls just short for me.  It's very good but the sauce is just too sweet for this to rank higher.

Spris- (South Beach) An underrated spot over on Lincoln Road that features some interesting topping combinations. Always leave satisfied.

Anthonys Coal Fired Pizza (Multiple Locations) They started the coal fired craze in South Florida and still excel at it. Their wings are the best in town so don't skip them.

RESTAURANT PIZZA TIER

Michaels Genuine (Design District) Love the breakfast pizza on the brunch menu.

MC Kitchen
MC Kitchen (Design District)  This new and great Italian spot in the Design District features a great broccoli raab and Italian sausage pizza on the lunch menu.

J&G Grill

J & G Grill (Bal Harbour) Their black truffle pizza with fointina cheese is available on the brunch, lunch dinner menu.

Timo (Sunny Isles) Try their wood fired Black and White featuring ricotta, mozzarella, provolone and shaved black truffles.

To Do List

Fresco Trattoria (South Beach) Milan import sounds promising.
Kitchenetta (Ft. Lauderdale)
Gran Forno Pronto (Ft. Lauderdale)
Stanzione 87 (Miami)
Macchialina (South Beach)  I love almost everything here so I bet the pizza is great too.
Pucci's (South Beach & Miami) My favorite back in Mid 90's.

Fried Chicken Wednesdays @ Michy's

The Return of Fried Chicken Wednesdays

It is the return of the Wednesday night parking lot smelling like hot and crunchy chicken and sweet cornbread with cars parked like dominoes. It is the return of families and friends dining in packs of ten, cooling off with riesling and rose. The chicken is the leading actor, but it is not the only star of the Wednesday show. For $39 refresh your palate with a sweet and savory watermelon greek salad laced with feta cheese and zahtar spice. Then get your hands dirty with fried chicken, honey, and cornbread, but use a fork for the coleslaw. And if bottomless fried chicken does not satisfy your brave appetite, then happily ruin your diet with a red velvet cupcake and a hat of cream cheese frosting. When? "All You Can Eat Fried Chicken" starts this Wednesday, June 5th. Call 305.759.2001 for reservations
